Inspiration Files: NY Fashion Week Invitations
Three of my favorite things? Fashion, Design, Paper Goods. The invitations for NY fashion week's events are just as inspiring as the collections for me and was actually the basis of my graduate research a few semesters back. Tess Giberson's invitation turns into a full poster. Mathieu Mirano's texture growing in the petri dish?! Tanya Taylor's print on print and geometric brought to 3D?!! They're all so good and had to just be fabulous to concept and design. The inspiration behind most garment designers' lines is like candy for me. Can't get enough of it. To then interpret the inspiration and spin off in another related direction, it's definitely a dream job!

Custom Design: Letterforms and Typography Book
A Visual Exploration of Letterforms and Typography from C.WhimsyDesigns on Vimeo.
One of the many topics we explored during the Fall semester graduate seminar consisted of numerous exercises involving looking at letterforms beyond their typical typographic uses. The project as a whole was a sort of boot camp. Part back to basics and part opening up to new ways of working and thinking with themes such as letter as a form, random letter, rhythm of a letter, the form of a letter, symbol systems, type to image transformation, analyzing form, and form repetition. The final task was to compile the designs into book form. I took that task one step further creating a layered accordion style book to reflect the layering and sometimes random part of the process.

Design Lovin': W Magazine Musings of a Muse
Although my book collection has rapidly grown over the past few years, I'm still adding to my first collection... of magazines. Since I've moved several times recently and just don't have the space, I've become particular about what I keep and throw out in my collection. Wmagazine's January 2013 is a keeper! From the moment I spotted the cover, I was intrigued. An entire issue dedicated to not just art, but art and fashion and the interplay of inspirations. Art... and Fashion... Inspiring each other?! Thank you! I'm still digging through the articles but wanted to share this beautiful shoot with actress Jessica Chastain and artist George Condo. In the article, he stated “I love the idea of two incompatible worlds brought together—opposing forces harmonically melded,” I couldn't have started off the semester with a better quote to sum up the ideas I'm inspired by and researching in grad school! Check out the rest of the article here

Design Lovin': Anna Karenina & Jacqueline Durran

You must excuse the ET music behind the second clip, because Keira Knightley's praise for Jacqueline Durran is spot on! Director of Pride and Prejudice and Atonement + Keira Knightley + the fabulous costume designer, Jacqueline Durran... I'm giddy! I absolutely cannot wait to see this! It's funny to me that there seems to be a looked down upon sense behind period pieces, because I find them imaginative and stunning! The fact that designers can bring something new and interesting such as the theatre point of view to a well known story and excite people like me over the beautiful garments is enough said!
